Built by an architect
Kept was created by Virginia Fay, a registered architect in Nelson, New Zealand. Across a quarter-century of practice — new builds, alterations, consent work — she kept seeing the same thing: a building briefly knows exactly what's inside it, and then the linings go on and that knowledge is gone.
The frustrating part is that the information usually exists. Someone on site photographed the cable runs, knew where the pipes went, saw what changed between the plans and the build. But it lived on a phone, or in one tradesperson's head, and when they left site it left with them. The knowledge that would prevent problems years later was there all along — it just wasn't kept anywhere the homeowner could reach it.
That's the gap Kept closes — especially on alterations, where trades are rarely on site at the same time, and what one knows is lost before the next arrives. The people building your home know what's behind its walls. Kept keeps that knowledge — with the house, for good.
